I have to agree with many of Edmunds comments.

One of the biggest failings of the UK Employee Benefits industry is the regular trend of experts 'talking their book', rather than trying to meet the needs of the end user (be that an individual or employer).

Most of the industry's effort goes into recycling existing cover, rather than extending the cover across new groups. Urgent action is needed to address this.

Good article Roger.

At point 2, for those of us who cannot afford an IFA perhaps a pointer to the MAS site should also be included.

The more people who have protection in place the better!

Well I haven't heard of the polo principle before but I like it.

And the What If game is so simple and powerful. Good ideas I will use.

Great debate! Simpler products and somehow increasing consumer awareness of the likelihood and survival rate should they be diagnosed of a critical illness will go a long way. A central hub for unbiased protection guidance and advice is also a great idea!!

Good points Andrew. I'm sure TBI has some great salesman. I'll be sure to listen to what the better ones in Edinburgh say in their pitch.

Well I've bought loads of Big Issues - usually only one a week but 3 has been known! I've even bought one in Edinburgh, though I'm based down south.

I can only assume you've been unlucky; Big Issue sellers are required to observe a strict code of conduct and, in my experience, almost always do. John Bird has installed a fantastic ethos at TBI. My main seller (Steve at Charing Cross) will, unknown to him, often manage to put my minor gripes in context with his positive outlook on life.

So, go on, buy one a week. It'll be good for you (and them). And even with the recent price increases it's cheaper than term assurance.
